Hip Hop Affirmations: The Only Time We Got Is The Time We Make

The only time we got is the time we make
And that time could never be replaced
Frozen~

Jared Evans

Affirmation of the Day:
The only time I have is the time I make

Have you heard the saying, “If you want something done, give it to a busy person.” Why is that?  It doesn’t seem to make sense on the surface, except for the fact that the busy person will make the time, get things done and move on.  The person with time on their hands may run into the temptation to procrastinate.  Oh, I speak from experience: When I was a student-athlete everyday was filled with some kind of practice or game to be played.  I was able to manage my time to include my athletics, my academics and my extracurricular activities such as my fraternity and peer counseling.  You would think once the athletic season was over and I now had an extra free 2hrs a day I would get more school work done…that wasn’t the case.  I found ways to procrastinate and waste those 2hrs a day.  When I was busy I did not have the luxury of procrastination.

You can beat procrastination by getting things done right away.  Adopt the, “I do it now!,” Philosophy. You can also create deadlines for yourself so you stay on track.  Now quit reading and get to work <with love>

Question of the Day:
What have you been putting off?

Action of the Day:
Check out the book “Getting things done” by David Allen for a good time management system.

Hip Hop Affirmations: Dreaming About Getting Paid

‘Cause I don’t like to dream about getting paid.” ~RakimPaid in Full

I like to dream about getting paid…but I also like to take action to get paid.

When I was an intern following graduate school and could only afford to buy sunflower seeds and quarter water, I would dream about getting paid. I created a list of ways to make money. One young lady at the job would say, “Bruny, you are always up to something;” she was right. I did not like trying to figure out what my future wife and I could do with only enough money for train fare.

So I decided to create my get paid list. I was hungry (figuratively and literally) and let everything around me inspire what went on my list. I was sitting at my internship one day and the candy machine guy came by–”Oh” I thought, “I could own candy machines.” My list included everything from painting houses to buying candy in bulk and selling it at a marked up price. My list has evolved over the years to include selling books, presenting and consulting. The key is to get an early start on learning how to make money so it feels easy and natural over time.

Affirmation of the Day:
I am a money making machine

Question of the Day:
What unique talent can you use to generate income?

Action of the Day:
Create a list of your hobbies and places where you can get paid doing what you love.

Hip Hop Affirmations: What Are You Looking For?

As sure as this earth is turning,
souls is burnings
in search of higher learning
Turning in every direction
seeking direction”

– Jay-Z
Regrets

What are you looking for? The 3 years following grad school, I had 4 jobs as I tried to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. What did I discover? Sometimes you have to jump around in order to find what you are truly seeking. It can take a lot of guts to leave a situation that is not right for you, especially if you are fighting the pressures from voices around you telling you what you should be doing and that, “you are lucky to have a job.”

Some people think a little differently. They feel that the job is lucky to have them. They understand that they may not be in the ideal situation, but they continue to use their “off” time as “on” time. Time to get on to discovering what they are really passionate about. In my search I’ve done many different things including a stint in a Multi-Level Marketing company. Some may cringe or turn their nose up at that opportunity, but I can tell you first hand that my experience sparked a desire to focus on personal development.

I recommend self-discovery to everyone. It doesn’t matter how old you are, it’s never to late to figure out what you want to be when you grow up.

Two books recommended by Ambassador Bruny for Self-Discovery:
-The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren
-What Color is Your Parachute by Richard Bolles

Affirmation of the Day:
I love all the unanswered questions I have about what I want to do with my life. It shows that I care about my impact on this world

Question of the Day:
What do you want to be when you grow up?

Action of the Day:
Find 10 minutes to focus and journal your answer to the question of the day

Hip Hop Affirmations: Don’t Sweat The Details….yet

“I could use a dream or a genie or a wish to go back to a place that is much simpler than this.”
B.O.B
Airplanes

Affirmation of the Day:
I believe in magic

Let me pretend for one moment that I know all the steps involved to accomplish all the wonderful things I want to do in this world–if I waited for that statement to be true, I would never take action.  For as long as I could remember I was a dreamer.  I was a kid with a vision (not necessarily the step by step plan to accomplish it) and at times some well wishing adult or peer would try to get me all tied up in the details and knowing all the steps to accomplish the goal/vision or suggest I move on to something else.  So, what has changed for this kid who grew up on Hawthorne Street in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn?– yes, sunflower seeds, quarter water, and Mr. Softee ice cream trucks where staples of my yout (sic.) <in my best Jamaican ascent>

I’m much lighter with it now.  I stay with the vision, but I don’t try to kill it with the details of how it’s going to get done.  I have learned to share my vision and ask for thoughts and assistance.  I’ve also learned to trust myself so I can take feedback and input, but stay true to my vision.

Question of the Day:
Do you believe in magic?

Action of the Day:
Put logic aside for a second and see what is possible.

Hip Hop Affirmations: Are You Flexible?

Mona Lisa can I get a date on Friday
and if you’re busy, I wouldn’t mind taking Saturday.”
 ~Fugees
Nappy Heads (Mona Lisa)

Affirmation of the Day: I am flexible and not deterred by temporary delays

Live from The Netherlands it’s your hip hop affirmation for the day.  If only getting here was a easy as sending you this message.  My patience was definitely tested yesterday as I was supposed to fly out of Boston at 5 p.m. but had a delay due to maintenance issues.  After the third announcement of another extension in how long it would take for the plane to be ready we were offered the option to jump on another flight leaving at 10:55 p.m. that would have a stop in Paris before heading to Amsterdam.  I wouldn’t be telling the truth if I told you I wasn’t a little bummed.  It took me a moment to snap out of it and look at it as an opportunity to visit Paris’ airport.  I did use a lifeline and called a friend who listened to my situation and responded, “Oh, you just get more time to work on your master plan.” Oh yeah, that’s right; even the ambassador can use a boost every now and again.  I am definitely not above it.

Question of the Day: What’s the last situation where you really did not have any control but were still staying rigid?

Action of the Day: Choose another perspective in a difficult moment.

Hip Hop Affirmations: How Versatile Are You

“I’m  just a brother you love,
Cause I can sit down with scholars;
Stand up with thugs” –

Gist The Essence
– Young, Gifted and Black

Forget about “selling out” and focus more on creating the life you want. That includes having a range of connections in various circles. Personally, learning to move between dew rags and bow ties is a skill that took me time to learn and embrace.

Don’t forget where you came from, but don’t let it limit where you can go.

Affirmation of the Day:
I am versatile and can flow in different circles

Question of the Day:
What circle have you been running from instead of learning from?

Action of the Day:
Create a list of ways you can be more versatile in your life.
