We polled heads at Radio Rehab, Charlotte’s monthly adult hip hop party, for their favorite female emcees of all time. Heavy weights MC Lyte, Latifah and Lauryn Hill topped the list, but we got a few curveballs thrown in that made us say, Oh yeah!
Competition was tight, with a number of 3- and 4-way ties, but the closer we got to No. 1, a single lady’s name came up again and again.
5. Monie Love / Lil’ Kim / Heather B / Ladybug
4. Mia X / Roxanne Shante / Rah Digga / Da Brat : Everyone needs to let off steam once in a while, and this category clearly fills that requirement. Whether at a party or about to get at somebody, these were the chicks to bump.
3. Bahamadia / Yo-Yo : Epic clash between East v. West, Conscious v. Gangster, Natural v. Extensions!!
2. Queen Latifah / Lauryn Hill : We like guidance and teachers for the No. 2 spot.
1. MC Lyte : You really thought it would be anyone else?
Agree or disagree? Who do you think should have made the cut?
Can too much success ruin a hip hop artist? It can when it comes from movies and TV roles. Just ask Ice Cube, who went from being “The Wrooong N*gga to F*ck Wit,” to …we don’t even know what the hell anymore.
This latest GrownHeadz Convo, me, Resident Alien, the Hip Hop Purist and K-Rocka try to pinpoint the exact moment Cube traded in the sawed off for a Segway, and we put together a list of songs we wish Cube would make now, for the grownheads. (5:01)
What topics would you like to hear Cube rap about?
Once again its on. Another action packed five minutes of deep hip hop discussion. We did this a few months ago and we posted it on YouTube. But we don’t work for YouTube, we work on behalf of the adult hip-hop consumer. So JUST for your enjoyment…
Since Common’s new movie with Queen Latifah is opening today we figured the time was right to drop this gem. We discuss ya boy who’s been putting it down since “Can I Borrow a Dollar” and has a certified hip hop classic with “I Used To Love H.E.R.” but just never seemed to break into that upper echelon of emcees. What’s keeping Comm from that next level? By the way, we’ve got LOTS of love for the self-professed MC with a temper. We just sayin’…
Time for another episode of grownhead Convo. This time out we discuss can a conscious rapper be as big as their gangsta brethren. This is one our first shows that we’re just now putting up. I like to think we’ve gotten a little smoother since this one. Enjoy (hopefully). 5:36
We love Gabourey Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Paula Patton and others. But we hate the movie “Precious” and its light skin-good, dark skin-bad subtext. GrownHeadz commentator K-Rocka put it best: “It’s just old-school stereotype race casting. People can’t see through this bullsh*t?”
