Somebody Need To Tell: Holes in the Game

You know them, you love them. But periodically, these celebrities and politicians need an open-handed smack to the face to get their heads back on track. They’re not completely lost. Somebody just needs to tell ‘em.

Suck it up, T-Man.
Suck it up, T-Man.

Somebody Need to Tell:

    The Media

Yes, yes, yes, we get it. Tiger Woods cheated on his wife, and not once, twice or even three times a lady. But who’s REALLY shocked that a man worth so much money draws such cheap women? He don’t love them hoes, but obviously, he likes them a whole lot. Still, enough already.

    Tiger Woods

Up ya game, Playa. No pictures. No text messages. And Rule #1, neva neva, neva neva, eva eva leave a phone message that starts off, “This is Tiger.” Palling around Vegas with Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, you’d think you’d pick up some pointers. They got game; these dudes have been duckin’ out on their wives for years and NEVER got caught out there this bad—hell, Charles was getting head from a hooker while driving drunk, and he didn’t lose any endorsements. Dammit man, you could’ve gotten private pimpin’ lessons from the best. Think of it as a business expense; but it’s too late to write off now.

    The State of Connecticut

No mo’ Joe! No mo’ Joe! Lieberman GOTS to go. They tried to send him a message by snubbing him for Connecticut’s Democratic nomination, but he’s not getting it. It’s time to get yourselves together and show Joe the door. This dirty SOB has clearly been bought by insurance companies with the main objective of killing healthcare reform. I say put him out of office and the party so he can officially represent all those insurance companies he’s shilling for right now.

IMO: Looking For A Man During the Holidays

3 Places To Find Guys During the Holidays

By Yo Jeff Carroll

While the holidays are a good time for couples, most people would say they’re a bad time for single people. Well, I like to challenge popular belief. As a good man myself, I know that Thanksgiving through Martin Luther King Weekend is probably the best time to find a person to date. You won’t need stilettos or new clothes to find them either, just a healthy helping of friendly attitude.candy cane heart

So, if your goal is to find good dating material, the holidays are a premium time to do so. Here are a few places you should be scouting out.

Charity events.

The end of an old year and the beginning of a new one bring out the good in people. I have a saying: Good people do good things and miserable people do nothing. Go to a soup kitchen or a church’s homeless outreach. Organize a canned food drive or collect clothing for needy people. Typically, most volunteers are older and married, but the few single people who give back on the regular are high quality–and that’s what you’re aiming for. After all, if you were only after numbers, you could just go to the club.

The Mall, or independent retail centers.

When window shopping for mates, make sure the guy is not buying gifts for a girlfriend or wife. Guys don’t go to the mall looking to pick up women, and you can catch them off guard. Chill out at the food court and sit next to a guy who you think is your type, or browse the nonfiction aisles of the book store.

A Friend’s Holiday Party.

Your friends probably have similar values to you and even if they don’t share your taste in men, it’s a good bet they’re aware of what you like. Check out their parties and see who they introduce you to. This goes for male friends’ parties too, not just your female friends. After you meet someone, make sure you ask your friend the host about details on them.

Bonus points: The Gym!

This isn’t a place I’d normally recommend, but during the holidays, the type of guy working out at the gym changes a little. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years fall at the end of the year and people start to think about personal improvement. So, if you get the fitness bug, pass on the musclehead lifting free weights and strike up a convo with the guy on the treadmill.

So, get your conversation ready and get off your couch watching movies–a date isn’t going to just walk through the screen. Don’t give up, there are a lot of good people all around you. After I got married, I saw more marriageable people than before, so believe me they are out there. As always, your boy Yo Jeff.

ALBUM of the WEEK: Reks – More Grey Hairs

more grey hairs

From his MySpace page
Before the Grey Hairs, REKS was just a teenager who fell in love with the hip-hop movement. Little did he know, one day he would experience working with the legendary DJ Premier and Large Professor. Born Corey Isaiah Christie in Lawrence, Massachusetts, August 24th, 1977, REKS practically grew up with Hip-Hop.

After high school, REKS enrolled into the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. With the Kanye West drive and mentality, REKS decided to drop out of college after one year to pursue his music career full-time. REKS got his career boost in the state’s hip-hop capital, Boston, Mass. He took the underground hip-hop scene by storm and surprised everyone with his first debut album Along Came the Chosen on Landspeed Records in 2001

After several years in the game, REKS released his highly anticipated sophomore studio album Grey Hairs. He teamed up with his former DJ, longtime friend, and Grey Hairs Executive Producer, Statik Selektah.

More Grey Hairs features leftover material from thr Grey Hairs recordings. Be on the lookout for REKS upcoming self titled studio album R.E.K.S. (Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme) scheduled to be released on MArch 9th, 2010. The Year of the Showoff continues…..

Just a reminder: these are not the complete songs, just 90-second clips so you can get a feel for the music. If you like what you hear, buy the CD. If we want good hip hop to flourish, we’ve gotta support the artists.

GhTV: True Hip Hop Stories – Pee Wee’s Dance

Straight from D-niceTV to GhTV to you. D-nice (yeah that D-nice) has been doing pretty good for himself since he stopped hangin with BDP from back in the day. he’s a photographer, DJ, and a few other things I’m sure. Maybe I should just say Renaissance man. ANYway he’s been making these docu-shorts (I just made that word up . but it sounds appropriate) about well true hip hop stories. This one we found interesting featuring Joe Ski Love discussing his one big hit, Pee Wee’s Dance. He has some pretty good insight on what’s happening today and how some grownheadz feel about rappers like Soulja Boy. (5:53)

Just in case you need a reminder, here’s the original song from back in the day

BOUGIE:Love In the Time of Recession

Love In the Time of Recession

Call me old-fashioned. Call me a chauvinist. But I believe that a gentleman ALWAYS pays on the first date. A recent experience left me wondering if I’m the only one left who feels that way, when I was asked to pick up the second half of a first date with a new guy.

There had been hints. “I don’t date,” he’d told me. But when I asked him if he went out, got something to eat, got drinks in order to get to know people; he’d said he did. He griped about the distance he’d driven to pick me up and go to the pizza parlor, and mentioned something to the effect of “I know I didn’t come all this way just to get something to eat and turn right back around.” We had danced around the topic of finance, more specifically his lack thereof. But when I suggesting after-pizza drinks and he was all for it. So when the check came, I shouldn’t have been surprised to find him looking at me and asking me to pick it up.

broke blackSince my first date at age 17, I have NEVER been asked to pick up any part of a first date. Although one of my friends assured me I was a rarity, it was still a breathtaking experience to have. I felt flustered, and nervous, and angry and de-feminized. To be fair, I’ve heard brothas gripe about always being expected to pay for everything. I agree that the cost of dinner, drinks, entertainment and transportation for 2 multiple times a week can get astronomical.

I’m not so stuck up that I can’t date a guy without major bank. I don’t expect guys to be balling out of control, and that’s not my criteria to select a man. Granted, my own financial woes are already depressing enough without having a man who is struggling too, but how can I demand someone who’s financially well-off when I can’t match it?

Still, I won’t apologize for feeling that when a man wants to see a woman for the first time in a romantic setting, it’s part of the tradition for him to pay. Me paying for the drinks killed the entire romance that had been blooming up to that point. Because my No-Dough Romeo and I had been establishing an open and honest friendship, we discussed some elements of the situation.

But I feel that some candor was called for in this situation BEFORE we went out, BEFORE we decided on after-pizza drinks and BEFORE he ordered an Irish car bomb and two Ketel Ones with a splash of tonic. I wouldn’t have thought any less if he had said “I really want to see you and get to know you better, but I’m light on funds this week. Can we go Dutch and I’ll get you next time,” or something to the effect BEFORE we even met up. Homeboy doesn’t feel that people require that much explanation in the early dating stages.

But if we can’t be honest about the basic things that make us who we are, if men are that hostile and feel it’s okay to pull a bait and switch from the expected order of things to prove a point, if you don’t like me enough to treat me—then what’s the point? I say retire from meeting people on romantic terms, and spend your limited resources on a ho on the stroll. At least you’ll get your money’s worth—guaranteed.

ALBUM of the WEEK: Willie Isz – Georgiavania

The Hip Hop Purist swears by this album.

From the the groups MySpace page.

Jneiro Jarel and Khujo Goodie? Who would have figured?

On the surface, the two couldn’t be more different. Jneiro is an acclaimed rapper, singer, and producer of bleeding-edge beats. In fact, he usually adopts a different alias for each album: 2005’s Three Piece Puzzle as Jneiro, 2006’s Brazilian-inflected Beat Journey as Dr. Who Dat; and last year’s space-hop adventure Craft of the Lost Art as Shape willie isz - georgiavaniaof Broad Minds.

Meanwhile, Khujo Goodie is one-fourth of the legendary Goodie Mob, the Atlanta quartet behind the groundbreaking 1995 classic Soul Food. His inimitable baritone and Southern wisdom is recognized by hip-hop fans the world over. He continues to be an underground force, releasing a well-received solo album, Mercury in 2007.

Together, the two are called Willie Isz.

Just a reminder: these are not the complete songs, just 90-second clips so you can get a feel for the music. If you like what you hear, buy the CD. If we want good hip hop to flourish, we’ve gotta support the artists.

Words From Willie

willie isz

from the Willie Isz MySpace page, on their sound, inspiration and name:

“My dad’s name is Willie Gilyard, and his dad’s name is Willie Knighton. And they’re both from Georgia,” explains Jneiro. Meanwhile, the “Isz” comes from the 90s MTV cartoon The Maxx, where little carnivorous monsters called the Isz plague the titular superhero. It’s inspired by Khujo’s trademark growl: “Khujo’s got a monstrous type of approach where you’ve got to take him seriously.”

They both hail from Georgia, but Jneiro currently calls Philadelphia and Los Angeles home. It’s their mix of sensibilities – Jneiro’s urban futurism and wildly unique vocals alongside Khujo’s classic Southern rap – that powers Willie Isz’s Georgiavania.

“We definitely want to keep that Dungeon, Goodie Mob, OutKast vibe. A lot of hip-hop is lacking that soul that Dungeon Family used to bring to the table. We’re holding on to that,” says Jneiro.

“But we’ve got some new elements. When we put out that ‘Georgiavania,’ man, people were like, ‘Man, I can’t believe Khujo spit on a beat like that! He’s snapping on the beat, too!’ I want the people to see Khujo in a different type of way. This dude is incredibly talented. I want to showcase his diversity.”

“It’s that vibe,” says Khujo. “The type of music that JJ is blessed to sit in the room and come up with is the vibe that music is going to go.”

Georgiavania’s title track, a Gothic mix of bounce-rap and that crazy “Rrraagh!” sound from De La Soul’s “Ego Trippin’ (Part Two),” is definitely on some other ish. But it only hints at Willie Isz’s eclecticism.

“It’s very musical, and it’s very electronic,” says Jneiro. “You’re going to hear guitar and live instrumentation, and there’s only one sample on the album. It’s a whole ‘nother perspective of my approach. People know me for being extra weird, but I bring it more down to earth with this record. It’s a good balance between the two.”
